Edward VII Park

Yes, Edward VII of the UK. This large park is passed on the way in from the airport but its most appealing feature does not show itself.

The Estufas [glasshouses] are at the top - to the left as you look upwards. They hold an amazing collection of tropical plants and creatures and make for a pleasant break after walking around the town. The telephone number below is that of the Estufa Fria, where concerts are sometimes held. All terms of heat and cold are relative and this one is only cold in relaton to its neighbour!

Belem Tower, Lisbon

Today you will visit St. George Castle, including its surrounding quarter and Alfama, Lisbon's oldest quarter.

Some of these monuments can still be seen, especially in the area of Belem. Please note the Jeronimos Monastery is closed on Monday.

But Lisbon has more than just monuments! You will visit also the traditional commerce areas of the city, with their 18th century buildings: the Downtown and the Chiado.

The Naval Museum – Museu de Marinha

The Naval Museum, founded by King Luís on June 22nd, 1863 is at present situated next to the Monastery of Jerónimos in Lisbon (Belem). It was housed for a time in the former Naval School and the Palace of the Count of Farrobo before making the symbolic transfer to Belém, for it was from Belém, not far from the chapel of Our Lady of Belém, that Vasco da Gama set sail for India, so when the museum was moved to this site an "old dream of the Navy" was fulfilled. Starting with some models of Portuguese Royal Navy vessels, items began to be collected for the Naval Museum during the 18th century. Today, over a century later, the collection has grown to over 16.000 items, not counting the photographic and other archives that contain plans and drawings of ships. There is an extensive collection of craft, as well as naval artillery and nautical instruments showing important events in the history of the Portuguese navy, not only in the golden age of Portuguese navigation, but also in the centuries which followed. This traditional collection-based museum provides very little interpretative and contextual support, however, thereby undermining its considerable  value when considered from the pan-national point of view of the global patrimony of humanity: the Portuguese navy succeeded, where Zheng He did not, in opening up the sea passages of the world to trade.

Monastery of Jerónimos

Monastery of Jerónimos

Build in the sixteenth century, this monastery close to the river banks has been the burial ground for the royal family for over four centuries. In this monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the monks of the Order of St. Jerome used to pray for the well being of the Portugese king's soul and for the succes of the sailors that discovered the world's seas in his name. It is an excellent example of the Manueline style, a typical crossover between late medieval and early renaissance architecture, even though it was severely redecorated in the nineteenth century. Pay attention to the net vaults and the elegant columns of the Santa Maria monastery church. Most famous is the inner cloister, at the moment beeing renovated. Already declared a National Monument in 1907, it became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984.

Private Lisbon History and Tapas Walking Tour 7 hours

Private Lisbon History and Tapas Walking Tour

On this private guided walking tour you will be able to sample a small taste of what this region has to offer.

Visit the sites destroyed by the earthquake in 1755 destroyed Lisbon and see the ones which survived. The mega-earthquake of 1755 and the tidal wave that followed had devastating effects, resulting in enormous material and human losses. The destruction of the city's buildings led to an unprecedented reconstruction program and created an opportunity for the development of new solutions, not only at the level of architecture and civil engineering, but also in the field of town planning.

Highlights include Alfama, Praca do Comercio, St Jorge Castle, Rossio, Chiado, Bairro Alto.

Tapas means "cover". Portugal is famous for its fish and shellfish, and a Tapas bar is a great place to sample the array. Fried fish, from tiny fresh anchovies and rings of tender squid, to chunks of fresh hake and batter-dipped prawns are waiting to entice you.

The selection of shellfish will astound you. Clams and razorshells, mussels, prawns ranging in size from tiny to jumbo, crab, lobster and more. There will be a variety of hot dishes. Some are cooked to order, such as prawns pil pil, sizzled with garlic and oil or garlicky grilled pork loin, while others are dished out of a bubbling stew-pot.

You can savor meatballs in almond sauce, kidneys in Sherry sauce, sauteed mushrooms, chicken fried al ajillo, with garlic; lamb stew; broad beans with ham; piquant tripe, spicy snails, and, of course, tortilla, a thick round potato omelette. Crisp-fried fritters and croquettes are other great Tapas of Andalusia, which produces the world's finest olive oil.

Due to the large array available and to allow you to make the most of your Tapas experience, the Tapas is not included in the tour cost and you will order your choices at the restaurant.

Private Birdwatching Tour on Tagus Estuary 10 hours

Collared Pratincole on Tagus Estuary, Portugal

Your tour includes a visit to Ponta da Erva, a vast farmland north of river Sorraia (a tributary to the Tagus estuary), covered with natural pastures (where bulls feed before bullfights) alongside different cultivations. Purple Herons fly continuously over the fields coming back and forward between farmlands and a big colony nearby.

You may also see Collared Pratincoles, whose colonies are annually settled in ploughed parcels of land. Fields are patrolled by Marsh Harriers and it is possible to find a day roosting Barn Owl in an old rural building. In this area, you will visit saltpans and saltmarshes where Black-winged Stilts breed and Red-crested Pochards are frequent. In winter, the landscape may change dramatically, as parts of the area become flooded. Likewise, bird species are also different, and include over a thousand Greylag Geese, variety of waders and waterfowl, and some considerable flocks of Little Bustard. Raptors are amazingly abundant, and include Hen Harriers, Peregrines and Merlins.

The next part of the tour crosses the extensive montados of Pancas, where colorful species, like Hoopoes and Bee-eaters, are common during spring. From a high spot, appreciate the whole estuary and watch hunting Black-shouldered Kites, Booted and Short-toed-Eagles and Black Kites. Spotted Eagles have been regularly overwintering in the same area. You will visit another salpans (Vale de Frades and Belavista), used by Kentish Plovers to breed before you head to Hortas, near Alcochete. Here, during the low tide, you may observe wader and waterfowl species, plus Flamingos, Spoonbills, Herons and Egrets. In some periods, it seems the birds cover all parts of mud uncovered by the tide!

Your tour ends at Barroca d'Alva, a ricefield area, surrounded by montados. At this site, it is common to see large numbers of White Storks, Egrets and Glossy Ibis flying very high. Many well adapted introduced exotic species help to make up the scenery.

Belém Tower

Belém Tower

As the architecture of the middle ages gradually changed into renaissance architecture, Portugal discovered the New World on the other side of the oceans. The incorporation of elements from the oversea cultures lead to a typical style called: the Manueline style, of which both the Tower of Belém and the Monastery of Jerónimos is a superb example. As a symbol of the King's prestige the tower’s decoration includes all the Manueline symbols - cables encircling the building and terminating in elegant knots, armillary spheres, crosses of the Military Order of Christ and naturalistic elements such as the rhinoceros, the first such representation in stone known in Europe. The Tower of Belém was build to defend Lisbon and its river entrance. Construction began in 1514 under supervision of Master Builder, Diogo de Boytac, also in charge of the building of the Jerónimos Monastery. This is also a reason for stylistic resemblance between the two buildings. Another major reason is the nineteenth century restoration of both buildings.

Metropolitano de Lisboa

Two names are attached to the Lisboan metro network: Keil do Amaral and Maria Keil. Together they made the network not just an efficient way of getting around the town, but also an artistic journey. Keil do Amaral was as architect responsible for the terminal building at Lisbon's Portela Airport, and did numerous other public building projects. Maria Keil designed the wall coverings for the Lisbon subway over a period from 1957 to 1982. Covering nineteen stations with glazed painted tile or azulejo. This is a traditional Portuguese form of decorating wich you’ll find in many a church or governmental building, but which had fallen into disuse in the first half of the twentieth century. The best examples of her work you’ll find at the Intendente, Restauradores and Anjos.

Private Full Day Tour to Queluz Palace, Mafra, Ericeira and Sintra - UNESCO World Heritage Site 9 hours

Quelez Palace, Portugal

Begin with a visit to Queluz Palace, an 18th century palace and the official residence for the guests of the Portuguese Republic.

Next, journey to Mafra, where you can visit the largest palace of Portugal, built also in the 18th century by order of the megalomaniac King D. Joao V. This building, apart from its function as a palace, was also a monastery and includes an enormous basilica. The size of this building is awe-inspiring with more than 600 rooms and, 5200 doors and windows. It has a Natural Park with around 20 kilometers of perimeter (called "Tapada de Mafra").

From Mafra, continue to Ericeira, where you can enjoy excellent fresh fish of the day, for lunch. After that, there isn't anything better than a small walk in Ericeira, always near the sea, to relax before continuing to Sintra - UNESCO World Heritage Site.

When you arrive in Sintra, walk through its historical center, followed by a visit to Pena Palace (eccentric Romanticism of the 19th century) or Sintra Palace (the antiquity and genuineness from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries).

As this tour is private, you have some choices:

  • If you wish to experience Cape Roca, Cascais and Estoril Coast, you can do so by not visiting the interior of Mafra Palace (time consuming). Please note, you can still maintain the visit to the impressive Basilica of Mafra Palace.
  • The Pena Palace is closed on Mondays, the Sintra Palace is closed on Wednesdays and the Queluz and Mafra Palaces are closed on Tuesdays. So, on Tuesdays, the program of this tour includes only an external view of Queluz and Mafra Palaces, however the visit to Mafra Basilica is possible. The alternative proposal for Tuesdays is to visit a handicraft center near Mafra that has a reproduction of a traditional 20th century small village of this area. After Sintra, the journey continues to Cape Roca, Cascais and Estoril Coast.
