Afternoon Tea at Fortnum and Mason Varies

Afternoon Tea at Fortnum and Mason

Afternoon tea was invented by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford (1783-1857), one of Queen Victoria's ladies-in-waiting. In her day, the upper crust ate a huge breakfast, little lunch, and a very late dinner. Every afternoon, the duchess experienced a "sinking feeling." One afternoon she instructed her servants to serve tea and little cakes in her boudoir. The experience was so delightful that Anna repeated it every afternoon thereafter. Soon others followed the Duchess' lead, and in just a few decades the custom of "taking tea" in the afternoon had become well established.

The famous Fortnum and Mason was founded in 1707 by William Fortnum, one of Queen Anne's footmen. During the 1700's Fortnum and Mason made a name for itself by selling rare teas and spices, not available anywhere else, much like today. Fortnum and Mason has held a number of Royal Warrants over the years, which are reviewed every ten years and still hold the following Royal Warrants: "Grocers and Provision Merchants" by appointment to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, "Tea Merchants and Grocers" by appointment to H.R.H. The Prince of Wales and "Suppliers of Leather and Fancy Goods" by appointment to H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

Enjoy a traditional English afternoon tea at St James's Restaurant during your visit to London, consisting of a fine selection of teas, luxury and traditional sandwiches, pastries and a selection of scones with clotted cream and preservatives.

Enchanting Cotswolds with Afternoon Tea 10 hours

Enchanting Cotswolds with Afternoon Tea

The first stop on this day trip from London is Henry VIII's magnificent riverside palace, Hampton Court, remodeled by Sir Christopher Wrens, with the south and east fronts modeled in the beautiful baroque style, creating the "English Versailles". The outstanding Palace was also home to both George II and William III. Take a step back in time to see the state apartments of Henry III, including the Great Hall and Chapel Royal.

Steeped in history and heritage the area of England known as the Cotswolds is a charming blend of cottages with honey-colored walls and thatched roofs, market towns with crooked half-timbered houses lining the High Street, and ancient stone crosses, all set in the gently rolling hills ("wolds") that are so typically English in character.

The Cotswolds landscape has been shaped by its long history as a center of wool production, your tour takes you through some picturesque villages including Burford, Bourton on the Water and Broadway, where you'll see crooked little houses, leaning walls and gabled cottages, and surprisingly large Market squares harking back to the area's importance in the wool trade. It is here you will stop for lunch in one of England's most outstanding areas of natural beauty.

The magnificent park and gardens of Blenheim Palace are set in over 754 hectares of land, with 7 themed gardens including the water garden reminiscent of the grand chateaux of France and Italy, the Secret Garden with its unusual trees and shrubs, the Italian Garden with its mermaid fountain and the very English Rose Garden.
