Royal Albatross Colony

The world's only mainland albatross colony. Originally this was a Maori pa, but after fortification in the 1880s, Taiaroa Head is occupied by the Northern Royal Albatross, a colossal bird that can reach a wingspan of up to three meters! . Larnach Castle

Larnach Castle, NZ's only remaining Castle*, is situated high on the beautiful and scenic Otago Peninsula. Climb to the top of the Castle tower for 360 degree panoramic views from 1000 feet above sea level. Portobello Aquarium

Also know as the Portobello Marine Labortory or NZ Marine Studies Centre and WestpacTrust Aquarium. This facility is owned and operated by the Otago University. The Aquarium is open to the public and is well worth a visit. The aquarium includes a 'hands on' section where you can touch several types of sea plants. Many types of fish are on display. The main feedings are twice per week and well worth seeing if you're visiting on those days - check with the centre to find out the current feeding days.

The aquarium is located on the Otago Peninsula approximately 23 kms from the centre of town. Upon entering the Portobello village from town turn left at the shop and continue along Hatchery Road, an unsealed road, for 2 kms.
