| Cesky Krumlov - A Medieval City |
10 hours |
|
Today you will have a chance to admire the beautiful south Bohemian countryside with its picturesque villages and ponds. Cesky Krumlov is a town on the UNESCO heritage list. The unique urban complex comprising three hundred historic houses and the Castle and Chateau, the second largest after Prague Castle, draws many visitors every year and is rightly called the "Pearl of Renaissance".
The unrivaled status of the town led to the declaration of Cesky Krumlov as a Historical Urban Reservation as early as 1963. The significance of Cesky Krumlov as an unusual Historical Monument was pointed out in 1992 by the act of the International Association of UNESCO. Cesky Krumlov was included among the monuments of world importance, those to which exceptional care, attention and support had to be indispensably devoted.
The State Castle of Cesky Krumlov, with its architectural standard, cultural tradition, and expanse, ranks among the most important historic sights in the central European region. Building development from the 14th to 19th centuries is well-preserved in the original groundplan layout, material structure, interior installation and architectural detail. The mighty complex of the castle is erected on the rock promontory which has been sculpted by the Vltava river from the southern side and by Polecnice stream from the northern side. The castle towers proudly above the refined Renaissance and Baroque burgher architecture of the town below.
The town, together with the magnificent Church of St.Vitus and the complex of the castle, creates an unique feature of the whole region. Like a precious pearl, the town of Cesky Krumlov is situated in the valley surrounded with the massif of Blansko Forest to the north and the undulating foothills of Sumava to the south and west.

| Prague Castle in Detail - Walking Tour |
3.5 hours |

This 3.5 hour walking tour takes you to Prague Castle (by coach) and from here, your fascinating walking tour commences. The informative guide will take you on a tour of the interiors of the Prague Castle - the Royal Palace, St. Vitus Cathedral, St. George's Basilica and Golden Lane, highlighting all important historical details of the Castle.
Prague Castle - the largest medieval castle complex in Europe - was built around 850 AD by the Premyslid family. Its history has been long and rich, from its very origin to present day it has been the seat of administration of the country.
For more than 600 years, the roofs of the Castle have been overlooked by the towers of the Gothic Cathedral. The Cathedral, the seat of the Archbishop of Prague, was where the Coronations of the Kings of Bohemia were held until 1836. It is also where Saints, Kings, Princes and Emperors of Bohemia are buried. St. Wenceslas Chapel in the cathedral was built directly above the Saint's tomb by Peter Parler. "Charles IV donated many relics to the church all decorated with gold, silver and precious stones. No other King had enriched and honored the church so grandly and magnificently" (from the Chronicle of Frances of Prague, 2nd half of the 14th century).
After your visit to Prague Castle, the tour continues on foot through the Lesser Town to Charles Bridge where the tour concludes.

The Prague Jewellery Collection

A new, attractive jewellery exhibition may be seen at one of the loveliest spots in the old part of Prague. It is housed in the former Hergetova Cihelna (the Herget Brickyard Building) near Charles Bridge in the Lesser Town. This event has been realised through the collaboration between The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague and the COPA company.
This unique assemblage of jewellery and goldwork from the collections of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague documents the evolvement of this artistic field from the 17th century to the present. Shown here are many articles which have never yet been publicly displayed, such as period gold jewellery, jewels embellished with Bohemian garnets and luxury objects for daily use.
Among the most intriguing exhibits are Tiffany artworks and famed Fabergé eggs made with gold, enamel, pearls, diamonds and other precious materials. Most of the exhibits date from the 19th century. Some items are fashioned from atypical, yet very handsome materials such as cast iron. The technique of casting fine jewellery from iron is still today considered unique. The jewels created in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods reveal superb craftsmanship. On view, too, are some of the Czechoslovak artworks exhibited at the Expo ‘58 world’s fair in Brussels, as well as original pieces produced by Czech jewellery-makers during the second half of the 20th century. Period clothing, jewellery boxes, etuis and mirrors may also be seen there.

You will begin with a journey to Konopiste Chateau, built in the 13th century and later converted. The original castle was built in the Early Gothic on the model of a French castellum near Prague. Renaissance and Baroque reconstruction changed the castle into grand stately home. At the end of the 19th century it was refurbished in the Romantic style for Franz Ferdinand d'Este, successor to the Habsburg throne, and famous for his death in 1914 which started WWI. The chateau offers a fine display of furniture, drape tapestries, sculptures, paintings and a cornucopia of hunting trophies. You will have a chance to see the representative areas of the chateau interiors documenting his life here as well as valuable works of art. After lunch, continue to the Karlstejn Castle which was built in the 14th century by Charles IV, the Czech King and Roman Emperor. At that time the castle held the treasure of the Holy Roman Empire including the imperial coronation jewels. The foundation stone of Karlstejn was laid in 1348 and the main building works lasted to 1356, the year of Charles' coronation as emperor. Charles IV devoted care to the rich interior decoration of the castle until the time of his death on 1378. The castle was modified in the Renaissance style and re-built in the purism style between the 19th and 20th century. Please note that this excursion is physically demanding.
