Marco Polo once called Hangzhou, "the most beautiful and magnificent city in the world." It is a city rich with history and culture, spanning back over 2000 years. It made a name for itself in the sixth century, when the Grand Canal opened up and linked the area to other centers of trade. The Song dynasty helped make Hangzhou famous when the imperial family moved there in the 12th Century. With its inviting views and outstanding scenery, the area soon became popular with artists, poets and painters seeking inspiration in this little bit of paradise.

Your first stop will be a cruise across West Lake to experience peace and serenity like no place else in the Shanghai area. The boat ride begins at Fish & Flower Harbor, then you'll see such unforgettable scenery as the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, Bai and Su Causeways and Solitary Hill. After lunch you will visit Guo Villa, one of the nicest garden villas in Hangzhou. From here it's on to the most striking structure in the city, the Six Harmonies Pagoda. You'll get to visit the charming museum and snap some photos in front of this architectural marvel that was built in the Song Dynasty. Your last stop will be a visit to Meijia Tea Village, for a traditional tea ceremony and its significance to Chinese culture.

At the beginning of World War II, about 30,000 Jewish refugees fled from Europe to Shanghai. Calling themselves 'Shanghailanders', most settled in the Hongkou District where the local residents kindly offered food and medicine for these displaced people. The Jewish community thrived in the Hongkou. Bakeries, stores, cafes, synagogues, schools, clinics, cemeteries, and even a Jewish newspaper all flourished there.

Built in 1927, the Ohel Moishe Synagogue served as the spiritual heart of Shanghai's Jewish community and currently houses the Museum for Jewish Refugees. It has been reconstructed to its original appearance and features a photo exhibition from the period. On this tour you'll also visit Huoshan Park, a peaceful retreat where the Monument in Memory of Jewish Refugees now stands. Duolun Road is also a must-see stop because of the history, culture and humanity of 1920s-30s Shanghai. You'll wander among the museums, antique and curio houses, calligraphers' and painters' studios, bookshops and literary clubs, teahouses and wine bars.

Shanghai is the largest and most prosperous city in China, often called the 'Paris of the Orient' or the 'Pearl of China'. Shanghai is one of the most important economic, financial and cultural centers in all of Asia. In recent years, its pace of development has been astounding. Even if you visited Shanghai only a few years ago, the changes are impressive.

The tour starts with the Oriental TV Tower, the unmistakable symbol of modern Shanghai. Standing in Pudong Park in the new and developing Lujiazui District, it overlooks the industry and commerce quickly developing on the banks of the Huangpu River. You will enjoy a panoramic view of Shanghai from the main observatory and have the opportunity to orient yourself to the thriving metropolis you're about to discover.

A cruise on Huang River gives you another way to see the Bund, the cultural district along the river. From this floating vantage point, you'll see 80-100 year old buildings with diverse architectural styles: Gothic, Baroque, and Romanesque. After a photo stop at People's Square, the picturesque green space surrounded by buildings on all sides, you visit the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. Here you?ll see the vision for the new Shanghai, complete with exhibits and an impressive scale model of the city planned for the future.

Your final stop is Nanjing Road, the first commercial street in Shanghai. It is pedestrian friendly, with no cars allowed, and is the popular shopping center of the city. You will experience two picturesque towns, Suzhou and Zhouzhuang, each unique in the splendors they reveal. Suzhou is one of the oldest towns in the Yangtze basin, founded in about 600 BC. With its interconnected waterways and beautiful environment, the city is often referred as ?The Venice of the East?. Suzhou was one of the few city's in China to escape the ravages of the cultural revolution and its famous gardens survived almost intact. It is the gardens here, which are the most famous attraction in the city. The gardens embody the harmonious principles of Chinese garden construction which dictate that gardens should attempt to create a microcosm of the universe in a confined space.

Upon arrival in Suzhou, the first stop is Net Master Garden, one of the best preserved Ming Dynasty Gardens in all of China. Then it's on to Silk Embroidery Research Institute, famous for its traditional techniques of double-sided and double-faced embroidery. The Institute is world renowned for its stunning animals, birds, butterflies and flower embroidery. No visit to Suzhou would be complete with a visit to the Ancient City Wall and Grand Canal.

After lunch, it's on to the water town of Zhouzhuang where you'll board a Chinese-style gondola to cruise on the waterways of the city. Zhouzhuang is well known for its beautiful environment and simple architecture, well preserved for over 900 years. The majority of the town's residences were built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and nearly 100 classic courtyards and 60 carved-brick archways are still in use. In this water village, locals live life on waterways, still doing everyday activities from washing clothes to shopping from vendors in boats.

Located in a suburb of Shanghai, Zhujiajiao is an ancient water town that shines like a pearl on the Dianpu River. In fact, Zhujiajiao is sometimes called 'Pearl Stream'. It is famous for its well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty architecture, ancient bridges, and quaint courtyards. Walking along the zigzag of narrow streets and past the shops in the center of town, you will see how the locals really live as they go about their daily labors, sit in the sun and chat, or play cards with their neighbors. You will also enjoy a leisurely boat ride, taste the local food, or just relax by the river under majestic willow trees.

Seven Treasure Town is another ancient village located outside of Shanghai. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Seven Treasures became a prosperous marketplace, known for its cloth, yarn, carpentry, rice wine and water. The textiles were treasured all over the world, with samples from the era still being displayed at the Great Museum of London. Some of the other sights you'll enjoy on the tour include a unique wedding hall inside the textile mill, a shop producing traditional rice wine, and other trades such as blacksmithing, bamboo craft and fine carpentry.

When the sun sets, the energy of Shanghai changes dramatically. You'll take part in all the excitement by experiencing the highlights of the city as day turns to night. We'll start our tour in old Shanghai where you'll visit Shanghai Old Street and Yu Gardens, the 400-year-old classic garden. Next you'll drive through the former French Concession District, with its tree-lined streets and European architecture, then stop at Xin Tian Di, the chic entertainment district. East truly meets West in this popular cultural center. Then it's on to see the historic treasures at the Jade Buddha Temple, filled with precious collection of jade statues from Burma. After dinner you'll board a boat and experience the Bund after dark. Jiangsu Province is home to many ancient water towns in the Yangtze River Delta, famous for their waterways, bridges and authentic village homes. Tongli is one of the most beautiful examples, built on seven islets with 15 canals and nearly 50 bridges.

Established in the Song Dynasty, Tongli Water Village showcases over 1,000 years of history and cultural heritage. An example of the rich tradition of local craftsmanship can be seen at Jiayin Hall. Built in 1922, it is known for its collection of more than 100 well-preserved wood carvings of classical Chinese figurines. There are 49 bridges in Tongli, three of which have become the cultural symbols of the town. Named Taiping (peace), Jili (luck) and Changqing (celebration), locals walk over the three bridges to wish peace, fortune, happiness and health for their family and friends. There are also many traditional gardens in Tongli. Tuisi Garden, which was constructed between 1885 and 1887, is a wonderful example of a traditional Chinese garden,. You will have the opportunity to stroll the pavilions, terraces, halls, rockeries and ponds to experience the harmony of the garden.

The China Ancient Sexual Cultural Museum explores more than 6,000 years of human sexuality in this most unique of museums. It features a large collection of historic and erotic artwork and artifacts relating to sexual culture. With more than 3,500 pieces, the collection ranges from stone and jade sculptures, antique sex toys, fertility idols, porcelain figures and paintings. The pieces are organized into various categories, including the evolution of sex, sexuality in religion, development of the marriage system, sexual oppression of women, erotica and sexual health. Parts of this world-famous collection had previously been shown to great acclaim in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Yokohama, Melbourne, Seoul, New York, Rotterdam, and Berlin.

Our evening begins by attending an astounding performance by the Shanghai Acrobatics School & Troupe. They have won hundreds of gold medals in different international acrobatics competitions, and are beloved by their countrymen for the incredible feats of skill and grace. If you have never experienced a world-class acrobatics show, this is a must-see event. After the show, you will travel by luxury coach to catch a view of Shanghai at night. Zhu Jia Jiao is a classic water village, over 400 years old with a signature five-arch bridge spanning the Cao Gang River. Zhu Jia Jiao was an important town for local trade, shipping goods in and out of its manmade canals to the river. Today, its main street is lined with quaint shops and restaurants serving local favorites. You can stroll the maze of paths and bridges, and take a boat ride to view the residences of this nicely-preserved water village. Zhu Jia Jiao is also home to two impressive temples, which add to the charm and historic significance of the village.

After a few hours sightseeing in Zhu Jia Jiao, you'll make a stop to shop for silk. Learn how silk making became a major industry in China and bargain for clothes, accessories, quilts and handmade rugs.

The picturesque water village of Zhouzhuang is admired for its beautiful landscape and simple architecture, well preserved for over 900 years. Shanghai is home to one of the few modern movie and TV studios in Asia. More and more movie companies bring their productions to the Chedun Film Studio, which has a growing list of internationally-known movie titles to its credit: Jasmines Bloom (2003), Purple Butterfly (2004), Kung Fu Hustle (2004), The Great Raid (2005), Legend of a Fighter (2005), and The Painted Veil (2006).

The town of Chedun is located in the Songjiang District, about 15 kilometers from downtown Shanghai. Songjiang is a fertile agricultural area that borders the lower reaches of the Changjiang River, and has a growing presence of industry and manufacturing. It is in this setting that the studio has flourished.

Many film and TV productions use the sound stages, film library and screening rooms, but the real attractions are the authentic sets that recreate 1900s-era Shanghai. Some examples include: 'Nanjing Road in the 30s', 'Suzhou Creek', 'Downtown Shanghai', 'Peace Plaza', 'Old Shanghai bridge' and 'Lake and Mountain Area'. Other sets reflect the architecture of the time- from traditional houses and churches to the European-style architecture of the period. The studio also has an extensive costume and prop collection.

The Bund is the cultural section of Shanghai that best represents the blending of ancient and modern influences. This renowned waterfront district is the city's most famous landmark. The word Bund is of Anglo-Indian origin meaning "embankment on the waterfront," and you'll experience the definition literally with a feeling of space and openness that you won't find anywhere else in Shanghai. The tour starts with an evening cruise on the Huangpu River, which divides the Bund into two sections, Pu Dong and Pu Xi, which mean "east of river" and "west of river." Local people honor the Huangpu as Mother River, and you will understand why as you view the lights and spectacle from the deck of your evening cruise.

After the cruise, we will enjoy a walk along the Bund on our way to the historically famous Peace Hotel, which served as the center of Shanghai?s nightlife in the 1920's and 30's. Here you can enjoy yourself on your own, or travel with the group back to your hotel.

This might be the fastest and most fun airport transfer you'll ever experience. Shanghai's magnetic levitation (MagLev) train opened for service in November 2004, and makes the 32 kilometre trip between Pudong Airport (PVG) and downtown Shanghai in only 8 minutes.

You will be met upon arrival at Pudong Airport by a Gray Line representative and accompanied aboard the MagLev. Once you arrive in downtown Shanghai you will be driven to your hotel. Or alternatively for your return transfer you will be met at your hotel in Shanghai, transferred the meet the MagLev train, then accompanied to your departure flight at Pudong Airport.
