At the beginning of World War II, about 30,000 Jewish refugees fled from Europe to Shanghai. Calling themselves 'Shanghailanders', most settled in the Hongkou District where the local residents kindly offered food and medicine for these displaced people. The Jewish community thrived in the Hongkou. Bakeries, stores, cafes, synagogues, schools, clinics, cemeteries, and even a Jewish newspaper all flourished there.

Built in 1927, the Ohel Moishe Synagogue served as the spiritual heart of Shanghai's Jewish community and currently houses the Museum for Jewish Refugees. Guhua Park

Guhua Park, is a delightful, well-planned park on the outskirts of Shanghai in Nanqiao Town. The best part of the park is "San Nu Temple", which is a tribute to the three daughters of the King of Wu who during the Zhou Dynasty hanged themselves in the north Nanqiao Town of Fengxian in order to avoid being caught by the soldiers of Yue. It is a peaceful and worthwhile daytrip.

Take the subway to Xinzhuang station and catch a public bus from the southern side (about 1 hour).

Suzhou and Zhouzhuang Water Village Day Tour 10 hours

You will experience two picturesque towns, Suzhou and Zhouzhuang, each unique in the splendors they reveal. Suzhou is one of the oldest towns in the Yangtze basin, founded in about 600 BC. With its interconnected waterways and beautiful environment, the city is often referred as ?The Venice of the East?. Suzhou was one of the few city's in China to escape the ravages of the cultural revolution and its famous gardens survived almost intact. It is the gardens here, which are the most famous attraction in the city. The gardens embody the harmonious principles of Chinese garden construction which dictate that gardens should attempt to create a microcosm of the universe in a confined space.

Upon arrival in Suzhou, the first stop is Net Master Garden, one of the best preserved Ming Dynasty Gardens in all of China. Then it's on to Silk Embroidery Research Institute, famous for its traditional techniques of double-sided and double-faced embroidery. The Institute is world renowned for its stunning animals, birds, butterflies and flower embroidery. No visit to Suzhou would be complete with a visit to the Ancient City Wall and Grand Canal.

After lunch, it's on to the water town of Zhouzhuang where you'll board a Chinese-style gondola to cruise on the waterways of the city. Zhouzhuang is well known for its beautiful environment and simple architecture, well preserved for over 900 years. The majority of the town's residences were built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and nearly 100 classic courtyards and 60 carved-brick archways are still in use. In this water village, locals live life on waterways, still doing everyday activities from washing clothes to shopping from vendors in boats.

The China Ancient Sexual Cultural Museum explores more than 6,000 years of human sexuality in this most unique of museums. It features a large collection of historic and erotic artwork and artifacts relating to sexual culture. With more than 3,500 pieces, the collection ranges from stone and jade sculptures, antique sex toys, fertility idols, porcelain figures and paintings. The pieces are organized into various categories, including the evolution of sex, sexuality in religion, development of the marriage system, sexual oppression of women, erotica and sexual health. Pudong (Shanghai) Airport Transfer on the 500kph MagLev Train Varies

MagLev Train

This might be the fastest and most fun airport transfer you'll ever experience. Shanghai's magnetic levitation (MagLev) train opened for service in November 2004, and makes the 32 kilometre trip between Pudong Airport (PVG) and downtown Shanghai in only 8 minutes.

You will be met upon arrival at Pudong Airport by a Gray Line representative and accompanied aboard the MagLev. Once you arrive in downtown Shanghai you will be driven to your hotel. Or alternatively for your return transfer you will be met at your hotel in Shanghai, transferred the meet the MagLev train, then accompanied to your departure flight at Pudong Airport.

A little way south down the Bund from the Peace (turn right as you face the river) stands the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank. By the time this grand branch opened in 1925, the bank was reputed to be the largest bank in the Far East, whose building is a unique set of contemporary murals rediscovered during recent renovation work.
