| Jewish Life in Berlin Walking Tour |
3 hours |
|
In the 1920's the Berlin Jewish community was much the largest in Germany, numbering 200,000 at its height. From the early 30's until 1945, immigration, persecution and finally the Holocaust all but obliterated the community.
This tour covers all the major sites and buildings associated with the community in its heyday in the 18th and 19th centuries. Included are the sites of the first synagogue in Berlin; the Boys School, founded by Moses Mendelssohn in the 1780's; the Old Cemetery site on Gross Hamburger Strasse; and the spectacular New Synagogue, now rebuilt as a museum about the pre-war Jewish community and about the synagogue itself.
Learn about the years of persecution from 1933 to 1945 by visiting the site of the main detention centre used by the Nazis (the former Old People's Home) and by revealing where Otto Weidt's workshop was, explaining how he helped save the lives of many members of the community. Also, see the site of the Women's Protest in 1943, perhaps the only mass protest against the Holocaust that ever took place.
This tour is recommended in the "Goldapple Guide to Jewish Berlin" by Andrew Roth.

| Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial Walking Tour |
6 hours |
|
While the Nazis were hosting the 1936 Olympic games, slave laborers were being forced to build a huge new concentration camp just north of Berlin, intended to hold political opponents of the regime. Soon, homosexuals, trade unionists and members of the religious groups swelled prisoner ranks.
Sachenhausen was one of the main concentration camps in Nazi Germany, purposely built in 1936 by the SS. The second major camp to be built after Dachau, it was set up to detain all 'enemies' of the regime - political, racial and 'asocial'. Of the 200,000 people interned, over 50,000 lost their lives by execution, systematic brutality and appalling living conditions. See the main exhibits inside and learn why this camp was built.
Following Kristallnacht in 1938, thousands of Jews were sent to the camp where they faced especially brutal treatment. Thousands of Soviet POW's were murdered immediately after arriving at Sachsenhausen in 1941, and it is estimated that over 50,000 people died here before the camp was liberated by the Soviets in 1945.
The camp was then used by the "liberators" until 1950 to detain former Nazis, German soldiers and political opponents of the communists. Many thousands more died from malnutrition and disease.
Inside the camp you will see the "Appellplatz" - parade ground, the Jewish Barrack, punishment cells, execution grounds and crematorium, "Station Z", the Pathology Laboratory and camp hospital.
This tour was researched by historian Gabriel Fawcett who is publishing in English the most important witness account of the camp. All tour guides have their own special insights into the history of Sachsenhausen, and are experienced in unraveling the complex history of the Holocaust.

(TV Tower at Alexanderplatz) Berlin's tallest building. So that everybody could see the heights socialist building could achieve, GDR communist party boss Walter Ulbrich demanded that the tower have as many metres height as the days of the year -an easy number to remember. Since Berlin lies on the North German plain it's worth going up the tower to see the view over the city from the platform at 203 metres or the revolving café at 207 metres. | Half Day Berlin Wall Cycling Tour |
4.5 hours |
|
A non-strenuous way to see more of the former East, more of the Wall, and more of what makes Berlin the unique city it is today, this Berlin Wall Bike Tour delves deeper into the darkest time in Berlin's history - The Cold War. Regardless if this is your first trip to Berlin of if you already feel like "ein Berliner", this is a great way to see the city.
An extremely insightful four and a half hour tour, leisurely covering about 6 miles (10 kilometers) by bike. This pervasive tour covers why Berlin was divided and how, the Berlin Airlift, tales of espionage by both the Allies and feared East German secret police (Stasi), the downfall of communism, how Berlin is dealing with its past and much, much more.
Your tour begins with an orientation to the Berlin Wall and the route you will follow, before hopping on your comfortable bikes. You go down the former main boulevard of East Berlin to reach the longest stretch of Berlin Wall still remaining - more than 3,300 feet (1 kilometer) of graffiti-painted Wall. Bike along more than 3 miles (5 kilometers) of where the Wall existed to understand the differences (many still existing) between life on both sides of the Wall.
After a lunch break in a typical German beer hall, the tour continues with additional checkpoints, escape attempt stories (some successful, some not), the last of the round deathstrip watchtowers, Potsdamer Platz, the Brandenburg Gate and much more. This is a great time to grab a bite and have a drink, as well as to plug your guide for inside information. Experience Berlin as the locals do!
Please note:
Although a handful of sights (such as Potsdamer Platz and the Brandenburg Gate) are on both the City Bike Tour and Berlin Wall Tour, the commentary is tailored at these sights to the Berlin Wall theme of the tour, ensuring almost no overlap with the City Bike Tour.

The once elegant Wilhelm Strasse and the surrounding streets gained a terrifying reputation during the Third Reich. On Wilhelm Platz, propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels transformed an 18th century palace into the sinister Propaganda Ministry.
Off the same square, Hitler built his intimidating New Reichschancellery and close by, the bunker where he committed suicide. On Wilhelm Strasse itself, Goering built the monumental Air Ministry while Himmler's SS and the Gestapo headquarters turned Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse into the most feared address in the Third Reich.
Find out about those who struggled against the Nazi system of terror, the devastation of Berlin by aerial bombing, the Soviet-led battle of Berlin and the final attack on the Reichstag. Finish the tour above the exact position where Hitler committed suicide. This tour strips away the myth and exposes sensationalist reporting about other shelters found in the area.

Brecht-Weigel-Gedenkstätte
(Brecht-Weigel memorial Centre) The last living and working quarters of Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigel.
A rare chance to see Brecht's vast library of books - in several different languages - as well as the room in which he wrote many of his plays and much of his poetry. His typewriter still sits at a desk overlooking the cemetery where he, and later, his wife were buried.
Inexpensive to visit, the museum is however also a Brecht study centre, and admits only a small number of visitors at a time and only at certain times of the day. Check local press for details. Guides speak a number of languages, and are unfailingly helpful and highly knowledgable.
The cemetery is also open to visitors; check the map near the entrance to find Brecht's grave.

Reichstagsgebäude (The Reichstag)
A symbol of German history. Pictures that went round the world: in 1945 the Soviet flag was hoisted on the Reichstag, in 1995 it was wrapped by Christo and Jeanne-Claude and since 1999 it has been the seat of the German Parliament. The dedication above the entrance reads: "To the German People". The dome built by Sir Norman Foster is not entirely in tune with this, because: anyone, if German of from abroad, can walk around freely inside it until midnight (admission till 10pm). | Berlin - Nest of Spies Walking Tour |
4 hours |
|
Your "operative" will take you to the Tiergarten, where British MI5 Agent Frank Foley secretly aided over 10,000 Jews to escape Nazi Germany.
Visit the courtyard of the Wehrmacht HQ, where coup and assassination plots against Hitler backfired disastrously. See where the SS masterminded their first program of mass murder, the "euthanasia project". Explore the outwardly grand "Stalin Allee", showcase of post-war East Germany's communists, but scene of festering discontent in 1953.
Find out about "Operation Gold", a top secret CIA/MI6 spy tunnel, and how a British double agent blew the whistle on the whole operation. On Bernauer Strasse, see where Berliners attempted audacious escapes under the Wall, trying to keep one step ahead of the hated East German secret police, the Stasi.
The tour finishes at the infamous Stasi HQ, office of Markus Wolf, "the man without a face" and model for John Le Carre's spymaster "Karla". Explore the museum at the end of the tour; the spectre of Stasi informers and their controllers will haunt your very footsteps!

Listen as your guide's superb story-telling skills weave the themes of Prussian, Imperial, Nazi, Cold War and 21st century Berlin into a detailed narrative, using the latest historical research. Detailed information is given on everything there is to see (and you will see it all on this tour!). Let history came alive by hearing stories of "real" people who contributed to the rich past of Berlin.
Start the tour with an account of how Berlin was first founded; walk across the Museum Island and find out which Museums are worth seeing! Enjoy great views of the Berlin Cathedral, the TV Tower and Red Town Hall. Stroll along the famous Unter den Linden boulevard - see the University and Opera House and find out where Nazi students burnt books in May 1933.
Visit the War Memorial (Neue Wache) and see the State Library, where Albert Einstein once worked; see where 1920's Cabaret Mile, Friedrichstrasse, once stood and how this place is being reinvented as Berlin's luxury shopping street. Find out how public transport worked in a divided city - visit a "Ghost Station".
Walk through the Brandenburg Gate and see the Reichstag (parliament) with its famous new dome; walk past the new Holocaust Memorial and visit the site of Hitler's bunker, and listen as your guide explains why there is nothing left to see and what happened here at the end of the war.
See how 21st century Berlin is taking shape on Potsdamer Platz; and find out where the Nazi SS and Gestapo HQ stood ("Topography of Terror"). See the Berlin Wall and follow the "death strip" (where the Berlin Wall stood) to Checkpoint Charlie; along the way, your guide will explain how the Wall was built as well as the momentous events of its fall in 1989, and show you where people managed to get over or through the Wall!
End the tour on one of Europe's most beautiful squares, Gendarmenmarkt, not far from the Wall Museum at Checkpoint Charlie.
