Catalan Festivals and Culture: Summer Sea Town Festival and Mediterranean Lunch 9 hours

Catalan Festivals and Culture: Summer Sea Town Festival and Mediterranean Lunch

Head to a nearby fishing town which unlike other coastal towns of the region, is not a massive tourist destination. Walking through the dusty summer streets is like stepping back in time to an authentic fishing town. The traditional community atmosphere is reflected in its annual summer festival, as hundreds of citizens from Vilanova take part in dances and ritual like traditions, which unfold in a long procession down la Rambla.

First on the festival agenda is a devil dance - Fire Run (Correfoc), during which men and women dressed in horned costumes dance to frenetic drumming while holding devil forks and sparking fire crackers. Discover where this tradition originates from and what it feels like to be a local devil. Straight afterwards, 12 foot giants from Vilanova perform a series of decorative and folkloric dances. Following closely behind are the Gypsies, Sticks, Shepherds and Circle dances. Why are there so many dances? Where do they come from? You'll have to come and see for yourself!

Finally, experience the spectacular Human Castle tradition as local men and women of all ages build great tower like structures up to ten stories high outside the Mayor's building. If Flamenco describes Andalucia, Human Castles points to Catalonia. Having built up an appetite, sample some Mediterranean cuisine at one of the sea side restaurants. In the afternoon, stroll through the town or go swimming in the warm sea.

Catalan Festivals and Culture: Summer Fire Festival at Gaudi's Birthplace 9 hours

Catalan Festivals and Culture: Summer Fire Festival at Gaudi's Birthplace

Celebrate the explosive summer festival at the birthplace of Catalonia's most famous Modernist architect, Antoni Gaudi.

Walk back through the centuries to where Catalonia's most famous Modernist architect, Antoni Gaudi, was born and discover the leading role that this town played in the Brandy trade during the 18th century. Enjoy a light leisurely meal, known in Catalonia as a pica-pica which consists of tapas and drinks.

Although tapas is a tradition that originated in the south of Spain, many bars throughout Catalonia also specialize in small tapas dishes such as Iberian Ham, little sausages, Spanish omelette, Russian Salad, Patatas Bravas and the Catalan specialty, bread and tomato with olive oil (pan amb tomaquet). All washed down with a refreshing glass of sparkling Cava, the Catalan equivalent of Champagne.

As the evening begins the main town square becomes the focus of attention on the most important date of this town's calendar, Saint Peter's day. A spectacular fire event from the 17th century called a "Tronada" signals the start of the evening?s festivities, in a series of explosions which introduce a whirl of fantastical Catalan dances featuring folkloric characters such as the Eagle, Dragon, Mule and Giants.

There are more delights yet to come with a Devil Dance, called a "Correfoc" (Fire Run). Devils run through the streets in showers of sparks and flames, holding fire forks. Dance with the devils underneath the sparks, or stand back and watch from the distance!

Catalan Festivals and Culture: Human Castle Festival and Montserrat 8 hours

Catalan Festivals and Culture: Human Castle Festival and Montserrat

Travel to a town where Castellers (Human Castles) is taken very seriously: If Flamenco describes Andalucia, Human Castles points to Catalonia. It is a bit like a sport but one that requires intense social commitment. Men, women, teenagers and children all take part in this spectacular tradition, and often foreign residents can be seen taking an active interest too.

Cries of "shhhhhhhhhhhhhh" ring out over the crowd as the first towers begin to go up. Why do all the team members bite their shirt collars as they take their place in the castle structure? The exertion and effort required is substantial and spectators also feel nervous, their hearts in their mouths. Do the people get scared as they go higher and higher? The biggest castles are up to 10 stories high and a tiny child, no more than 6 years old, completes the tower by saluting to the mayor, who stands on the council building balcony at the same height as the Human Castle.

At lunch time you will travel the short distance to the strange rock formations of Montserrat Mountain. Locals say that this Mountain is the shape of the lady Montserrat lying on her back. Travel a hidden road to an off the beaten track restaurant that few people know about. Catalan sausages, bread with garlic, tomato and olive oil and roasted aubergines and peppers are some of the mouth watering starter dishes. Discover how local people eat and leave the tourist restaurants of Barcelona far behind.

La Sagrada Familia the magnificent surreal church is designed by Gaudí. While still unfinished it’s like no other church you’ll ever see: Its design is a combination of a dragon’s cave and a castle made from whipped cream. (You can take an elevator up one of the spires but be prepared to cover your ears—the bell may gong while you’re up there. The view is awe- and vertigo-inspiring.)

Catalan Festivals and Culture: Mountain Wild Horse Festival 10 hours

Catalan Festivals and Culture: Mountain Wild Horse Festival

From Barcelona you will head north a village between Catalonia and France in the Pyrenees Mountains. This village has always been the center of an ancient agricultural trading tradition that is still very much alive, even today.

From June until October horses from different farms have been allowed to roam loose on the high mountain prairies, looked after by one eighty year old man from the village. This man stays with the horses on top of the mountains in a small hut.

As the weather turns colder, the horses are bought down from the mountain where the young calves are separated from the fully grown horses and trading begins. Travel to the top of the mountain to see the horses in their almost wild condition as they are lead down the mountain side in preparation for the trading fair.

After this unusual experience, you will visit some of the nearby picturesque mountain villages and try out some local Pyrenean gastronomy. Mountain cuisine typically uses bull meat, mushrooms and duck. Another specialty of the area is a type of cooking known as Mountain Sea Food which uses mixtures of seafood with traditional mountain products, such as chicken with prawns. Not forgetting the wine and the Crema Catalana, a type of custard with burnt sugar on top.

In the afternoon you will travel back to Barcelona, stopping off at a medieval Mountain town, founded in 1118 and famous for its large bridge that reaches across the river.

Catalan Festivals and Culture: Pine Tree Festival 9 hours

Catalan Festivals and Culture: Pine Tree Festival

This trip will head inland to the mountains where hundreds of little red dots can be seen. These are red peasant hats on the heads of local villagers breakfasting in the open air. After putting on a hat of your own, join them around the camp fire. Blank gun shots ring out all around as locals, dressed in peasant costume, announce that the long awaited festival has finally arrived. Listen to the history of the festival from the mouth of a Catalan local as you warm your hands next to the camp fire.

Next to appear is a cart pulled by two mules coming to carry the pine tree, chopped down earlier that morning, back to the village square. It is an exciting moment as everybody pushes together to help load the tree onto the cart. At midday the atmosphere reaches fever pitch as a large shape moves slowly towards the people out of the smoke. It is the pine tree, carried by mule and cart, accompanied by musicians. Everybody goes slightly crazy in this emotional and strange moment and then suddenly there is silence, before something unexpected happens.

After the applauding has stopped, the tree carries on its journey to the town church. Over 100 villagers join together in a human chain to drag the tree inside. And as the villagers stand in the church waiting expectantly, the tree is hoisted high into the roof over the altar, decorated with stars and apples that hang down from the branches.

At the end of the event, what could be more appropriate than rounding off the day with a traditional Catalan meal?

Palau de la Musica Catalana

The Palau is a great masterpiece of Art Nouveau architecture. The stained glass cieling alone is worth the 5 euro you pay to get the guided tour. jasna goic: Phillippa: This is one of the most beautiful concert halls in the world, a World Heritage site. From the minute you go into the foyer with the huge mural on the left, and start to climb the shallow marble staircase with its amber glass balustrading, through to the point where you come out at the top and realise that those huge white plough-horses looming over the balcony are hardly attached to the wall, it's a feast of visual art & craft. It was build out of stained glass, for goodness sake, so that the human voice should reproduce as perfectly as possible. The half-circle stage is a glowing homage to the muses of Music, via the muses of ceramics and painting, the great Tree of the Catalan choral tradition rises up one side and the bust of Beethoven glowers down the other, with - oh unwitting touch of Dali - the wildest Riders of the Valkyrie streaming out over his head up to the roof - which is covered by huge ceramic roses - and supports a sunflower of a sky-light hanging like a giant golden beehive over the stage. Go to a concert, the sound is fabulous, and the ambiance out of this world. A once -in-a-lifetime place. Concert Halls should all be as wild, exciting, stimulating as this.

Catalan Festivals and Culture: Summer Human Castle Festival 8.5 hours

Catalan Festivals and Culture: Summer Human Castle Festival

Head inland to a medieval town, famous for the wine and cava industry. While the surrounding vineyards create the impression of a dusty sleepy world, the center of this town bursts with vitality. After morning mass, the atmosphere becomes electric and the festival kicks off in full swing. Different folkloric dances, which stem from traditions that are over seven hundred years old, can be seen. The strange but stunning choreography include Giants, Big heads, Eagles, Circle Dancers and Shepherds. Where do these ritual type traditions come from? Come along and find out!

An hour later and the tension in the main town square reaches fever pitch as the Human Castle team congregates in the main square. This town is the heart and soul of this spectacular tradition and the biggest Human Castles are built at this annual festival. A sea of colored shirts steadily forms into an organized huddle of bodies. Slowly but surely, a tower emerges from the hundreds of people beneath. The strain is visible on everybody's face as maximum concentration is used by all to keep the castle stable as it grows up to ten stories high.

You might not be building Human Castles but you will have had time to build up an appetite. Next stop is a traditional Catalan restaurant, specializing in local cuisine. Sample char-grilled meats, bread with tomato and garlic and wine from a glass container with a spout, called a "Purro".

Full Day Tour to Girona, Figueras and Dali Museum 10 hours

Dali Museum, Figueres

Your first stop is the historical city of Girona. The houses situated at the very edge of the Onyar river and the bridges which span it, are no doubt one of the most authentic and spectacular sights of Girona.

While here, you will visit the impressive Cathedral whose location has been a place of worship since the Roman occupation. It was founded in 1038, however most of the present building dates from the 14th and 15th centuries, therefore it is the result of various superimposed styles; Romantic and Gothic. The interior contains numerous works of art, Gothic tombs and baroque altar paintings. The renowned Tapestry of the Creation (11th Century), The Beatus (10th Century) and a rich collection of medieval gold and silver works are exhibited in the Capitular Museum. The steep narrow street housed the Jewish community of Girona in medieval times.

Explore the Arabian baths, Roman building inspired by the Roman public baths with three rooms, each with a different temperature of water in their swimming pools. In spite of the presence of elements of Muslim origin, the construction corresponds to Romanesque.

After your visit you will continue to Figueres, hometown of Salvador Dali. Lunch is followed by a visit to the Dali Museum, which houses one of the largest collections of Dali's work in the world. The building itself can be considered a work of art.
