Full Day Private Tour - Piazza Armerina, Morgantina and Caltagirone 8 hours

Caltagirone, Sicily Set on a plateau almost 700 meters above sea level, the city of Piazza Armerina is not without charm. Founded during the Norman era, its historical quarter has some beautiful churches, including a Baroque cathedral, but most visitors come here to see the Roman Villa, which was built between 330 and 360 AD. Located a few kilometers outside town, the villa is one of the largest Roman dwellings of its kind to have survived antiquity and one of the most important archaeological discoveries with its decorative and figurative mosaics which cover a floor surface of 3.500 square meters.

Morgantina was founded during the Bronze Ages by King Morges who arrived with colonists from central Italy around 1300 BC. Absorbed by Greeks six centuries later, was destroyed by the Romans during the Punic Wars and rebuilt as a Roman city. Morgantina has a beautiful and natural setting, and its amphitheater dates back to the 3rd Century BC, and is well worth the visit.

Caltagirone is situated on a high hill and is rich in Baroque monuments. It is most famous for its ceramics art which boasts a millenary tradition. The Sicilian regional ceramics museum in the Public Garden is the first Italian Museum just second to Faenza. Expect a visit to a ceramics workshop where it is possible to attend a lesson in ceramic art with real craftsmen and artists.
