Roma

Understand

Situated on the River Tiber, between the Apennine Mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea, the "Eternal City" was once the administrative center of the mighty Roman Empire, governing a vast region that stretched all the way from Britain to Mesopotamia. Today it remains the seat of the Italian government and home to numerous ministerial offices.

The metropolitan area is home to around 3.3 million people.

For two weeks in August, many of Rome's inhabitants shut up shop (literally) and go on their own vacations; many stores and other amenities will be closed during this time. The temperature in the city centre at this time of year is not particularly pleasant. If you do travel to Rome at this time, be prepared to see Chiuso per ferie (Closed for holidays) signs on many establishments.
Anyhow even in these weeks the city is very beautiful and if you look for a less overcrowded vacation in Rome this is not a bad time.

Eat

The Trastevere neighborhood and the old Jewish quarter have some of the best trattorie and ristoranti in Rome.

In Rome you can ask for:
  • Carciofi alla romana (artichokes, Roman style)
  • Carciofi alla giudia (artichokes, Jewish style)
  • Puntarelle (Chicory Salad)
  • Bucatini alla Amatriciana (a pasta dish)
  • Spaghetti (or Rigatoni) alla "Carbonara", a sauce made with egg and pancetta (bacon)
  • Abbacchio alla "scottadito" (lamb chops)
  • Rigatoni con la "Pajata" (not always available)
  • Scaloppine alla romana (Veal Sautéed with Fresh Baby Artichokes)
  • Coda alla "vaccinara" (beef stew)
  • Cornetti e cappucino (especially cornetti alla nutella--a delicious, sweet pastry filled with nutella!)

  • Pizza. Lots of the better places only serve pizza in the evening, as it takes most of the day to get the wood oven up to the right temperature. Try some of the fried things like baccala (battered salt cod) for a starter, followed by a pizza for a really Roman meal. For one of the most famous places for pizza, try 'Da Baffetto' (Via del Governo Vecchio). Roman pizzas tend to be very thin crusted.

  • Avoid the tourist areas where you'll often pay double the going rate just to get a badly reheated frozen pizza. Instead, head for a pizzeria like 'Pizzeria Maratoneta' in via dei Volsci / via del Sardi, San Lorenzo area, where you'll find a fine atmosphere of families and groups of students, and you'll get a good meal with a bottle of local plonk at a very reasonable price. You'll get an English menu, too.
  • Pizza al Taglio. Pizza by the slice. A good cheap way to get something to fill you up, and it makes a good lunch. Point to the one you want, indicate if you want more or less than your server is indicating with the knife. It's sold by weight (the listed price is usually per 100 gm) and a good quick lunch or snack.

  • Panini. If you don't speak Italian, the question will always be asked once you've pointed out the sandwich, you want is 'Do you want it toasted?'. If not, you can simply state 'caldo, per favore' (make it hot, please). Please note: singular is panino,...

    {Vatican_City,Sights:Vatican Museum}

This museum is a real treasure chamber, packed with more works of art than can be viewed in a day’s visit. Especially the wing with classical sculpture is awesome. The most famous works include the Laocoon group, and the Torso Belvedere, next to the images the Roman emperors had erected for them selves. The pinacoteca contains paintings by all the great Italian painters from the 13th to the 19th century as well as many by foreign masters. Also the Sixtine chapel by Michelangelo and the Stanze by Raphael are part of the museum.

The founding of the Vatican Museums can be traced back to 1503 when the newly-elected Pope, Julius II della Rovere, placed a statue of Apollo in the internal courtyard of the Belvedere Palace built by Innocent VIII; he brought the statue from the garden of his titular church of St. Peter in Chains.

Full Day Private Tour - Erice and Segesta 8 hours

Segesta, Sicily In the morning you go on tracks of the ancient Elymian people as far as the ancient town of Calatafimi of Arab origin. Just a few kilometers from here, you arrive in Segesta where you can easily imagine what it was like to live in Sicily in ancient times. Segesta's history is intertwined with its arch-rival Selinunte. It offers the visit, on the cliff, to the 5th Century Doric Temple held up by 36 columns and the Hellenistic Theatre ? carved in the rock ? overlooks the splendid view from the top of Mount Barbaro at an elevation of 400 meters above sea level.

Taking into consideration all the Greek sites and temples existing in Sicily, we encourage you to see Segesta during your stay in Sicily, not only for the structures themselves, but for the beautiful and natural setting. Then you reach Erice, ancient Punic and Greek town (about 751 meters above sea level) on the mountain that has the same name. Surrounded by ancient walls, it is a labyrinth of clattered old stone streets and medieval churches adorned by beautiful buildings. In the historical center you will visit the Matrice with its marvelous bell tower and the Balio. There are some ancient Elimi and Phoenician walls around the north eastern side of the city, and two castles: Pepoli Castle - with foundations dating from Saracen times - and Venus Castle, dating from the Norman era but built on ruins of the ancient Temple of Venus.

    The Forum Romanum

    The Forum Romanum

With the name Forum Romanum are called all the monuments which remaining parts are standing between the Capitol, the Colosseum, the Imperial Fora and the Palatine. Here you can find the Arch of Triumph of Titus, the big Basilica of Maxentius, the Temple of Antonino and Faustina and the Temple of Saturn, just to mention some of these antique monuments.

The forum, which was the heart of the city, started out as a open marketplace, but gradually it got more and more adorned with portico's basilica’s and temples. This was the area in which public life manifested itself. If you wanted your name to be remembered in history, the thing to do was to donate a building to the city on the forum. It was also the place gladiator games were being held before the institution of the amphitheaters. The old forums became due to the addition of all kinds of public and privately build additions quite chaotic and the expanding also city needed a larger area as its center. This is why Julius Caesar initiated the building of the first imperial forum, of which four were to follow, build by his successors.
