Bergen
Understand
Historically, Bergen has been an important trading center, and has many relics of its Hanseatic heydays. The city is a major cultural center in Norway, hosting many festivals and music events, such as Nattjazz, a jazz festival in May, Bergen International Festival, a festival featuring among other things concerts, theatre performances and dance, and Bergenfest, a festival with focus on hip hop and pop music. The city is known to have rainy weather, averaging approx. 260 rainy days a year. But, as the Bergen people say, "there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing". Still, it isn't that bad if you know when to travel. The city is a beatiful sight if you score a sunny day. The best time to visit is May, with the rest of summer coming close behind. Eat
There are a great variety of restaurants and cafes in Bergen, but you should expect to spend some time looking for the best places. Move a block away from the most central parts of downtown to find lower prices and better food. Kitchens usually close at 11PM at the latest. Waiters and other restaurant staff have good wages. You are not required to leave any money to cover the service, but many people choose to tip the waiter if he or she has been helpful and nice, and if the food was good. If you choose to leave a tip, rounding up or adding about ten percent will be more than enough. A rule of thumb would be that the more expensive the food is, the more are you expected to leave a tip. BudgetHot Wok, Neumanns gate 20, +47 406 09 550. Good-quality Chinese food. Service is fast, and the prices are low. This is a place with many regular customers, especially between 4PM and 6PM. Around NOK 86 for most courses.Kroathai, NygÄrdsgaten 29, +47 55 32 58 50. The Thai equivalent of Hot Wok, although with slightly smaller portions. Service is usually fast, and the staff is friendly. Can often be full, so take-out can be a good plan B.Mid-rangeCafé Opera, Engen 18 (by the theatre), +47 55 23 03 15. Great food for the money. This is a place with many regular customers. During the day they serve lunch and cakes. Early in the evening it is a place for dinner and beer. Late night is for dancing. Café Jonsvoll, Veiten (by the theatre). Coffee, cakes.Kafé Kippers, Georgernes verft 12 (Kulturhuset USF). The café serves a variety of meals, from sandwiches to dinners. Most of the food is so-so, but the view is extraordinary, and if you are lucky enough to catch a sunny day, enjoying a large portion of blue mussels and a glass of white whine outdoors can be your best Bergen experience. Indoors the café has a quiet atmosphere. There are large panorama windows faceing the water giving you a romantic view even on rainy days.La Bottega Italiana, Strandgaten 80, +47 55 31 81...

Bryggen
Facing the water from the market, you will see the impressive old buildings of Bryggen to your right across the water. These are reminiscent of the days when Bergen was an important port of the Hanseatic League.
Now the buildings form museums, restaurants and expensive shops.
Usually these buildings are photographed from the front [as in the website below] but the rear is also worth seeing.
Fantoft Stave Church

This is only a short bus ride from the centre of Bergen. Make sure you get off at the FIRST stop for the church or you will have a steep walk up through the woods from the next.
This could be called a 'new' old church as the original was burnt down in 1992. The replacement was constructed to the original pattern and completed in 1997. In 1998 the fresh wood smell conflicted hugely with the architectural design! The original was actually brought here from a site in the Sogn area in the second part of the 19th century, having been first built in the 12th century.
The url below is for stave churches generally.
