| The Medieval City of Provins by Minivan |
11 hours |
|
After driving through 'La Brie', a charming part of Paris's surrounds, you will reach the city of Provins and its fortified walls. You will begin your visit with a walking tour of these magnificent military constructions which were built between the 11th and 13th centuries. Set in the middle of the Briard plateau, the towers and walls of Provins protected the prosperous town against the Kings of France.
Having discovered the small streets and the medieval houses of the city, you will follow your guide and visit the Caesar's Tower. The Tower existed prior to 1137 and was intended as a place of refuge should the town be captured. It was also used as a watchtower and a prison. Above all, this is the finest vantage point for a view over the surrounding countryside.
Lunch (drinks included) will be taken just a few steps away from the Caesar's Tower in a restaurant with a medieval atmosphere.
In the early afternoon, using your audio guide, you will visit Tithe Barn. During the Fairs of Champagne, the edifice was used as a covered market and merchants from Toulouse are known to have rented it in 1223 (Audio guide in French, English and German).
Then, to conclude this trip to the Middle Ages, you will discover the history of Falconry inside the Ramparts Theatre of Provins. A splendid aerial show of birds of prey - 'The Eagles of the Ramparts', in perfect harmony with horses, wolves and dromedary.
