Night Birdwatching Expedition - Pico do Areeiro and the Zino's Petrel 3 - 4 hours

Zino's Petrel (Pterodroma madeira) This night expedition is mainly to hear one of the most endangered seabirds in Europe, the Zino's Petrel. This endemic species (Pterodroma Madeira) pass all day in the sea feeding and only come onshore to breed and at night to rest. To protect itself from predators, they will fly as high as 1.1 miles (1.8 kilometers) to build their nests and lay its only annual egg.

This tour includes the transport from Funchal or Canico to Pico do Areeiro which takes about 40 minutes and then a walk of about 25 minutes up and down the mountains to get to a place near the breeding place of these spectacular species.

If you are not a keen birdwatcher but are accompanying one, do not stay at the hotel as you can enjoy a wonderful night of sightseeing during the walk under the stars on the highest peaks of Madeira Island. Though you may not have an interest in birds, Zino's Petrels will certainly make you curious as their calls sounds like a wail, which can scare the most seasoned traveler.

This is the only company authorized for this night expeditions to hear Zino's Petrels as it is prohibited by the Natural Park of Madeira to go there without a specialized guide. Adding this to the fact that Zino's Petrels are endangered, the Natural Park charges an extra tax of 20 euros for each person for the protection of the Zino's Petrels habitat.
