Ponta Delgada is a city in Azores.



Ponta Delgada (pron. IPA 'põtÉ dɛɫ'gadÉ) is a city and municipality on São Miguel Island in the Azores (an autonomous region of Portugal). The city proper has a population of 46,102 and the municipality has a population of 64,516 for a total area of 233.0 km². It serves as the seat of the executive government of the Azores Autonomous Region.

    Ponta Delgada is the tourist heart of the Azores. Museums and monuments are everywhere, and the historic streets connect everything from hotels and churches to shops and restaurants. Its huge first class marina harbours boats form all around globe and its nightlife attracts people from all over. In the evenings, especially during the summer, throngs of people promenade along the Infante Dom Henrique Avenue (by the seaside). The airport lies on the western edge of the city, from which there are daily flights to the other islands and mainland Portugal, and frequent direct flights to other European cities and North America.

    Located north of Ponta Delgada are the suburbs of Fajã de Baixo and Fajã de Cima. Fajã de Baixo is agricultural with pineapple cultivation. Fajã de Cima is famous for its festivities. To the eastern side of Ponta Delgada is the suburb of "São Roque" which is gradually becoming part of the city itself as it expands along the coast with the construction of a new marina and a seaside walk with leisure facilities.

    Ponta Delgada also has a university, the Universidade dos Açores (University of Azores), as well as schools, lyceums, gymnasia, banks, post offices, sporting facilities, three major soccer teams and several public squares (praças).

    Bordering the north-western part of the city is the mountain range of Sete Cidades in which are located the famous valley and lake of the same name.

    The soccer teams for Ponta Delgada are Clube Desportivo Santa Clara (Divisão de Honra (Honor League)), Clube União Micaelense (2ª Divisão B (2nd league)) and Marítimo da Calheta (Campeonato de S.Miguel (regional league)).

    Furnas - Hot Springs and Gorreana Tea Factory 7 hours

    Lagoa Furnas, The Azores

    After leaving Ponta Delgada and crossing the Island to the North in its narrowest part, a comfort stop will be made in Ribeira Grande.

    From Ribeira Grande, in any of the Belvederes, the coast will look different, but equally beautiful. Still in the north coast, a visit to a Tea Factory and Tea Plantations. The Azores is the only place in Europe where tea can be grown.

    Before lunch, a stop at Pico do Ferro, a belvederein the mountains with the best view of Furnas Valley. The cozido is cooked in the earth, near the Hot Springs for at least 5 hours. You will see it coming out of the ground.

    After lunch, a visit to the most beautiful Botanical Park of the Azores: Terra Nostra Park. A visit to the Caldeiras das Furnas, with its famous hot springs, mineral hot and cold waters and small geysers.

    The return trip is made using the south coast road, passing by Vila Franca do Campo.

    On this tour you will see lakes and Belvederes that are not as well known, and you will go to the village of Sete Cidades inside the crater.

    Sete Cidades, where emerald green and sapphire blue are the dominant colors - is the source of the legend of sorrowful princesses, of lost kingdoms. Vista do Rei Belvedere, so-called because it is where King Carlos and Queen Amelia could appreciate Sete Cidades Lake when they visited Sao Miguel in 1901.
