Saalfelden

Saalfelden (full name Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer) is a city in the Austrian state of Salzburg and is the administrative centre of the Pinzgauer Saalachtal. With approximately 17,000 inhabitants (end of 2004), Saalfelden is also the largest city of the Pinzgau.

Although Saalfelden since time immemorial has been the most populous parish of the Pinzgau, the city is not the seat of the district administration. This is situated in the neighboring town Zell am See.

    Your half-day excursion shows you the most beautiful sights of the southern part of the Vienna Woods.

    Passing the Roman City of Baden which is famous for its thermal springs you travel through the romantic valley Helenental to the former Mayerling hunting lodge, today a commemorative chapel. This is where the Crown Prince Rudolph, the only son of Emperor Franz Joseph, committed suicide with Baronesse Vetsera in 1889.

    In the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz (1133) you will visit the medieval cloister which houses the remains of the last Babenberger. Driving by the Holdrichsmuhle where Franz Schubert composed his song The Linden Tree, you arrive at the Seegrotte.

    From there, after a boat ride on the largest subterranean lake in Europe you leave the Vienna Woods and return to Vienna, passing the Liechtenstein Castle.
