WORLD NORTH AMERICA MEXICO RIVIERA MAYA
Riviera Maya

The Riviera Maya (or Mayan Riveria) is the stretch of coastline along Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula from Cancun to the city of Tulum. Many all-inclusive resorts and boutique hotels have been built in the past few years. While the area is quickly growing, it still maintains a more relaxed and rustic atmosphere than its 'wild' neighbor to the north, Cancun.

  • Understand

"Riviera Maya" is a tourism district following the highway 307 of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It historically started at Playa del Carmen and ended at Tulum pueblo, though the towns of Puerto Morelos to the north of Playa del Carmen and Felipe Carrillo Puerto inland are both currently being promoted as part of the Riviera Maya tourist corridor. The Riviera is generally thought to be bounded on the south by the Sian Ka'an Biosphere, south of Tulum.

The area is famous for its all-inclusive resorts located along the highway, as Mayan Resorts, and smaller boutique hotels located in and around Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

    Talk

Most locals speak Spanish. However, some locals trace their heritage to the Mayans who settled the area before the arrival of the Spanish. The present-day Mayans tend to live inland and speak little Spanish. In the tourist areas, many locals speak some English and some locals (esp. hotel and restaurant workers) are very fluent in English.

    By car
The major cities, such as Cancun and Playa del Carmen offer many car rental agencies. North American drivers will feel at home on the road here, despite some drivers' quirks. For example, on the main two-lane highway along the Riviera, it is common courtesy for slower drivers to pull over onto the shoulder to let faster drivers pass.

Rent a car at the Cancun airport. Playa del Carmen is roughly 45 minutes from the airport. Tulum is another 45 minutes. After passing through Playa del Carmen, the main highway (Rte 307) turns from a modern 4-lane highway into a "two and a half" lane highway. There are two regular lanes and an extra-wide shoulder...

Taxco and Cuernavaca from Mexico City 10 hours

    View of Cuernavaca

This tour will begin with a hotel pick-up, then you will head to Cuernavaca, a popular weekend retreat for Mexico City residents, where a small city tour will be given. It is a beautiful city known as the 'city of eternal spring' for its joyous atmosphere and enjoyable climate.

You will then take a scenic drive to Taxco, which is known as the 'silver city' and is one of the prettiest towns in Mexico. The city tumbles across a hillside with winding cobblestone streets, tile roofed buildings, cozy squares, and a strong Old World ambience that has survived for hundreds of years. You will visit one of Mexico's grandest churches, Santa Prisca. It was built in 1759 by French immigrant Jose de la Borda who literally stumbled upon a huge silver claim. Santa Prisca is a riot of ornate Baroque styling flanked by twin bell towers. The interior displays some of Mexico's beautiful goldleaf ornamentation. You will have plenty of time to have lunch and also visit the marketplace and the famous silversmith shops!

After seeing Taxco, it is time to head back to Mexico City where you will be driven back to your hotel.

    Xcaret from Cozumel 10 hours

    Xcaret

This so-called 'sacred paradise' is in the heart of the Riviera Maya. Xcaret (pronounced eesh-carette) is one of the loveliest and most unusual venues in the area. It is said that this was the ancient port of Pole and that the Maya used to come here to bathe in its waters to purify their minds and bodies before sailing to the nearby island of Cozumel to worship the goddess of fertility, Ixchel.

Mans ingenuity combined with natures splendor has formed a very interesting park with a variety of attractions. The park has focused on the areas natural flora, fauna, and natural landscape and used these to create a mini-wonderland. There are some small Maya ruins, but these are almost insignificant when you look around at the botanical garden, aviary, aquarium, stables and butterfly farm. There is an exhibition with scale models of all the major archaeological sites of the Yucatan.

There is also an inlet with clear waters for snorkeling, a lagoon for swimming and a beach for relaxing either in the sun or in the shade of the palapas. Or perhaps you would prefer a siesta in a hammock? But the most unique feature of Xcaret is its underground river, which passes through caverns and underground channels, put on a life vest and let the current take you slowly and safely along and marvel at the beauty of nature.

You will return at 6:00pm, unless you wish to stay for the magical night show, where you will see the story of the Mayan come to life! This option is included in the tour price, and you will return by ferry at 9:00pm. If you wish to stay on, please advise your tour guide a the beginning of the tour.
