The Atitlan Explorer takes tourists to one of three of the indigenous towns surrounding Lake Atitlan. Each of these towns has a unique textile pattern, language and traditions. You will visit either San Pablo, Santiago or Santa Catarina Palopo, but these may vary due to season or other conditions.
Commonly referred to as 'the most beautiful lake in the world', Lake Atitlan was formed in an immense volcanic explosion 85,000 years ago. An immense hole was left in the earth's crust, leading to Atitlan being one of the world's deepest lakes. Large fissures were formed during the explosion, out of which the water flows, making Atitlan unique in that it is a fresh water lake with no river outlet.
This Explorer picks up tourists in the docks of hotels in the Rio Dulce and takes them for a visit of the most interesting nearby attractions, one of which is the San Felipe Castle. The castle was built in 1652, in honor of King Philip II of Spain. This old fort was strategically designed on Rio Dulce banks to protect the Spanish Conquistadores from the pirates of the Caribbean that were pillaging the area.
The tall canyon walls on each side of the river are home to several species of flora and fauna; and the indigenous cooperative of Ak-Tenamit has unique handicrafts.
The Antigua Explorer is the best way to visit this colonial jewel and learn about its past. Antigua was the capital city of the Spanish Kingdom in the region until 1776. Tourists visit the city every year from around the world to enjoy its natural beauty and historic monuments.

Set amid three magnificent volcanoes - Agua, Fuego and Acatenango - its sturdy buildings have weathered 16 earthquakes and numerous floods and fires. Antigua is a Cultural Heritage to Humanity as declared by UNESCO.
