Private Tour of The High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk and Philae Temple 3 hours

Philae Temple, Aswan, Egypt

Unfinished Obelisk
Much of the red granite used for ancient temples and colossi came from quarries in the Aswan area. Around these quarries are many inscriptions, many of which describe successful quarrying projects. The Unfinished Obelisk located in the Northern Quarry still lies where a crack was discovered as it was being hewn from the rock.

Possibly intended as a companion to the Lateran Obelisk, originally at Karnak but now in Rome, it would have weighed over 2.3 million pounds (1 million kilograms) and would have been the worlds largest piece of stone ever handled. However, a crack in the stone occurred, which caused it to be abandoned. Tools left by it's builders have given much insight into how such work was performed. The site has recently been renovated and equipped with tourist facilities.

Philae Temple
Dismantled and reassembled (on Agilika Island about 1,800 feet (550 meters) from its original home on Philae Island) in the wake of the High Dam, the temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis, is in a beautiful setting which has been landscaped to match its original site. It's various shrines and sanctuaries, which include The Vestibule of Nectanebos I, the Temple of the Emperor Hadrian, a Temple of Hathor, Trajan's Kiosk (Pharaohs Bed), a birth house and two pylons celebrate all the deities involved in the Isis and Osiris myth.

High Dam
Located near Aswan, the world famous High Dam was an engineering miracle when it was built in the 1960s. It contains 18 times the material used in the Great Pyramid of Cheops. The Dam is 11,811 feet long, 3215 feet thick at the base and 364 feet tall. Today it provides irrigation and electricity for the whole of Egypt. From the top of the High Dam you can gaze across Lake Nassar, the huge reservoir created when it was built, to Kalabsha temple in the south and the huge power station to the north.

Coloured Canyon

Coloured Canyon

The Coloured Canyon is a magical place within the Sinai Desert, where you can clearly see the different colors the Sinai consists of.

In Nuweiba, Dahab and Sharm al-Sheikh, jeep-trips are offered to visit the canyon. You are dropped off at the beginning of the canyon, where you will have to climb down. The 800 meter walk through the canyon takes roughly 1 hour, and you will have to master some obstacles on your way, where boulders fell down, maybe hundreds of years ago. Whenever in doubt about which way to take: keep right.  At the end you will have to climb up again. Some trips include lunch in a bedouin tent. Don't forget to bring a bottle of water: the temperature in the canyon gets very high during the day.

Try to get there as early as possible. Not only because of the weather, but also to be there before all the other tourists. Egypt draws lots of tourist, and of course not all of them will visit the Sinai and the Coloured Canyon, but the magic of the place is best when on your own.

Mt Sinai

Mt Sinai

Mt Sinai (2285 m) and the midnight climb to reach the Summit for sunrise are a memorable excursion available from many Sinai resorts such as Dahab and Sharm. Muslims, Christians and Jews alike believe Moses received the 10 Commandments on top of Mt. Sinai. St Katherine's monastry at the base of the mountain has a unique library as well as the Burning Bush of biblical fame.

It is possible to climb the mountain in the middle of the night, starting at around 2.00 AM, and be on time to view the sunrise. Since you will not be the only one going to the top, you will see a chain of lights clinging to the mountain, a very special sight. Another possibility is to go up at around 8 or 9 PM the previous evening. Bedouins have started small shops on the way and at the top, so you will have something to drink and eat (cookies mostly) and at the top it's possible to hire some blankets, so you don't have to take along a sleeping bag. The climb is steep enough without one. Whatever time you go up, don't forget to bring enough water, a flashlight and some dry clothes, since the t-shirt you have worn on the way up will probably be soaked with sweat and you will need dry clothes to stay warm.

There are two different routes: one is the way the camels take and the other one consists of the so-called Steps of Repentence, 3000 steps going up. Most people take the camel route up and down, but it is nice to take the steps down. Even if you take the camel route, some way beneath the summit the normal trail meets the steps, and you will have no choice but to climb the steps up.

If you are get tired, it's possible to ride a camel up and down, but be aware that the last part of the way consists of the remaining part of the Steps of Repentance, and the camels stop at the base of these steps.
