History
Warren was incorporated as a city in 1957 and consists of what was previously Warren Township, less the city of Center Line. Between 1950 and 1960, Warren's population soared from 42,653 to 89,426. This population explosion was fueled in part by white flight from its southern neighbor of Detroit in that decade. This can be easily seen as one travels north on Van Dyke Road (M-53). When you start off at 8 Mile Road, the southern city limit, you can see many houses from the 1920s and 1930s behind the businesses lining Van Dyke. As you travel farther north the houses become newer, and by the time you reach 12 Mile Road the houses are of the 1960s era. This population explosion continued into the next decade when the city's population doubled again. As the community has matured, its population has begun to gradually decline.
