Point Pleasant
Point Pleasant is a Borough in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 19,306. The United States Census Bureau's 2005 population estimate for Point Pleasant was 19,861.
Point Pleasant was incorporated as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 21, 1920, from portions of Brick Township, based on the results of a referendum held on May 19, 1920. The borough was reincorporated on March 12, 1928.
Geography
Point Pleasant is located at (40.079642, -74.070419).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 10.8 km² (4.2 mi²). 9.1 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is land and 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it (15.14%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 19,306 people, 7,560 households, and 5,231 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,111.6/km² (5,461.6/mi²). There were 8,350 housing units at an average density of 913.3/km² (2,362.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.83% White, 0.29% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.41% of the population.
There were 7,560 households out of which 32.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.8% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.8% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the borough the population was spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.6 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $55,987, and the median income for a family was $64,798. Males had a median income of $50,828 versus $32,886 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $25,715. About 2.0% of families and 3.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.0% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
Government
Local government Voters elect a Mayor and six Borough Council members in partisan elections on an at-large basis. The Mayor serves a four-year term. The Borough Council members serve staggered three-year terms, with two seats coming up to vote each year.
