Clinton is a city in Sampson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 8,636 as of 2003. It is the county seat and largest city in Sampson County. Clinton is named for American Revolution General Richard Clinton.
History
The first settlers came to the Clinton area around 1740. The City of Clinton was incorporated in 1852. Since Clinton is practically the geographic center of the county, it developed as the major agricultural marketing center.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.3 km² (7.1 mi²). 18.3 km² (7.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.28%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,600 people, 3,336 households, and 2,058 families residing in the city. The population density was 471.0/km² (1,219.1/mi²). There were 3,690 housing units at an average density of 202.1/km² (523.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 53.08% White, 41.38% African American, 0.97% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.83% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.66% of the population.
There were 3,336 households out of which 27.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.5% were married couples living together, 18.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.3% were non-families. 35.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city the population was spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 21.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 89.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,904, and the median income for a family was $36,144. Males had a median income of $30,605 versus $21,654 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,672. About 18.1% of families and 23.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 31.5% of those under age 18 and 25.2% of those age 65 or over.
