Vitacura

Vitacura is a commune of Chile located in Santiago Province, Santiago Metropolitan Region. It is the country's richest commune and one of the most expensive and fashionable areas of Santiago. Inhabitants are primarily high income families.

There is an abundance of first class private Catholic schools in Vitacura and Las Condes, where the elite of the Chilean society is educated, including Saint George's College, Colegio Santa Úrsula, Alianza Francesa, Colegio La Maissonette, Colegio Tabancura, Colegio Los Andes, Colegio San Benito, Colegio del Verbo Divino , Villa Maria Academy, Colegio Cumbres and Colegio Cordillera.

The Costanera Norte toll-way connects Vitacura with the international airport and subway stations are located in the neighbor municipality of Las Condes.

Vitacura is see of ECLAC headquarters, home to the Chilean European Southern Observatory (ESO) headquarters, and home to Santiago's most exclusive shopping street, Avenida Alonso de Córdova.

Ski Center and Volcanic Caves

Located on the slopes of the Villarrica Volcano, 12 km / 7.5 miles from Puc?n, the visit to the volcanic caves is an interesting and exciting experience. This is one of two volcanic caves worldwide which are open to visitors.

Formed during several of the many eruptions of the Villarrica Volcano, descend 300 meters (990 feet) into the caves to witness their geological formation. The caves are fully lit with walkways and safety hats are provided. A guide explains how the caves were formed and the different types of rock formation and geological phenomena which can be seen.

The visit ends with a trip further up the volcano to the ski center (operates from June to August) where there are amazing views of the lake and surrounding countryside on a clear day.

Sailing to the Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers

You will embark on a small motor boat sail and along the Last Hope Sound where you can see black necked swans, fauna of the region and colonies of sea lions.

Following a journey of approximately 3 hours arrive at Monte Balmaceda where you can see the glacier of the same name. Time for viewing and photos here before continuing to the Serrano Glacier. A 15 minute walk takes you to the north side of the mountain for a great view of this fabulous glacier.

Lunch in the Estancia Perales on the way back and return to Puerto Natales.

Valle Nevado Ski Resort

Valle Nevado Ski Resort stands at a height of 3,025 meters/ 9,982 feet above sea level, situated in the mountains very close to Santiago.

Following the river Mapocho up the valley pass through some small mountain villages before really starting to climb the mountain, taking on a series of hairpin bends. The views are incredible and there is a good chance of seeing condors all year round.

The quality and variety of the pistes as well as the usually clement weather make this one of the best ski areas in the southern hemisphere. Skiing is available from June to August (lift pass, ski rental etc not included) and the rest of the year it is possible to enjoy the mountain air and wonderful views.
