Don't miss out on going to milford, taking a cruise, and enjoying the scenic wonderland. For once its probably better to take a bus, they don't rush it and you get good quality commentry.
Take a day walk somewhere - Lake Marrion for example. If you don't have gear you can hire it from Bev's Tramping Gear Hire.
Adventure sports!!! Kayaking, climbing, skydiving, jetboating + lots more is all in Te Anau.
Eat
Make sure you try La Toscana, best pizza and pasta around! Have to try the Nonno pasta and Fiordlander pizza. Wide range of italian and nz wines and a very relaxed atmosphere.
Drink
The three main venues in Te Anau are "The Ranch", "The Moose" and Redcliff. In order of age groups most likely to be found at each location. Also there is a working mans club for the older generations.

Get out
State Highway 94, or the Milford Road leads to Milford Sound, 120 km away to the north. While Milford Sound is a major tourist attraction, the trip itself is just as spectacular and should not be rushed. There are several scenic stops along the route that provide unique views. With about 2,500 visitors a day travelling to Milford Sound at peak times it pays to get an early start.
Te Anau is a town in the South Island of New Zealand. It is on the eastern shore of Lake Te Anau in Fiordland. Lake Te Anau is the largest lake in the South Island and second only within New Zealand to Lake Taupo. The 2001 census recorded the town's population as 1,857. The town has a wide range of accommodation, with over 3,000 beds available in summer.
Tourism and farming are the predominant economic activities in the area. Lying as it does at the borders of Fiordland National Park, it is the gateway to a wilderness area famed for tramping and spectacular scenery. Many species of bird life are also found locally, notably the endangered Takahe which can be found at the Fiordland Wildlife Park.
Te Anau is connected by highway with Invercargill and Gore to the southeast and east, and Manapouri to the south. Te Anau is the last town passed through when travelling to Milford Sound, which lies 120 kilometres to the north.
Te Anau has two schools; Fiordland College and Te Anau Primary school.
