History

Reeuwijk was formed as a location for peat harvesting and the first known reference to it is from 1248. The area prospered in 18th century when layers of peat were dug up, dried, and used as fuel for industries in Gouda. The :Image:ReeuwijksePlassen.jpg|Reeuwijk Ponds (Reeuwijkse Plassen) are the result of these excavations.

In 1855 the municipality Middelburg was added to Reeuwijk, in 1857 Oukoop, and in 1870 municipalities Sluipwijk and Stein. On 1 January 1989 the municipality Driebruggen (formed in 1964) was dissolved and the communities Waarder and Driebruggen were added to Reeuwijk.
