Port Clinton,"The Walley Capital of the World", is a fishing village and vacation spot on the north shore of Ohio. Most visitors to Port Clinton are parking and boarding boats and ferries to enjoy Lake Erie and Lake Erie Islands. It is a very clean and friendly place with plenty of places to sleep, eat and drink. The waterfront is downtown and the activity surrounds the marinas. Ferries leave to the islands frequently. It is the only City in Ottawa County.

    Port Clinton is located at (41.509857, -82.940156).

    According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.0 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (8.66%) is water.

    Demographics

    As of the census of 2000, there were 6,391 people, 2,777 households, and 1,768 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,169.5/km² (3,034.0/mi²). There were 3,504 housing units at an average density of 641.2/km² (1,663.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.15% White, 2.38% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.30% from other races, and 1.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.01% of the population.

    There were 2,777 households out of which 28.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.3% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% were non-families. 31.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.85.

    In the city the population was spread out with 22.3% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.

    The median income for a household in the city was $35,564, and the median income for a family was $44,579. Males had a median income of $38,949 versus $21,651 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,177. About 7.7% of families and 9.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.

    The City is famous for its annual Walleye drop, commemorating the new year, its fishing and boating industries, the annual National Matches at neighboring Camp Perry, and its proximity to a variety of vacation destinations (such as the Lake Erie Islands, the Cedar Point amusement park and a number of local wineries). Port Clinton's transient dockage on the Portage River is a safe harbor for Lake Erie boaters.

  • Louis C. Shepard: American Civil War Medal of Honor winner from Ashtabula County, buried in Lakeview cemetery, Port Clinton, Ottawa County, Ohio.
  • Chris Redfern: Current chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party, and former Ohio House Minority Leader.
  • Ty Gardner : received the " Bulldog" award for Port Clinton Redskins football team during the 2004-2005 season. He is also the nephew of former wrestling Olympic Gold Medalist Rulon Gardner.
