The final examination consists of 50 multiple-choice
questions. It is given on the last classroom day of the course and precedes
the open-water dives. There is only one answer for each question. There is
no time limit for taking the exam. It is not an open-book exam.
The questions cover all aspects of the course. The minimum
grade for successful completion of the exam is 100%. That means the diver
must know the correct answer to ALL questions prior to going on the open-water
dives.
There is special concentration of the use of the US Navy
Decompression Table. Several problems are related to being able to figure
out repetitive groups, stops, RNT, etc. Be sure to be thoroughly familiar
with these concepts.
Here are sample questions and concepts that one can expect
to find on the examination:
The first line of defense in a surface drowning of a fellow diver in Lake
Minnewaska is to do what?
The diver's flag commonly used in fresh water in the United States looks
like?

SPG, Compass, Watch, Weight belt, Depth gauge, Wet suit
As one descends colors "disappear" due to water's selective filtration and
absorption. Which color is lost first?
What beneficial thing, related to gases, happens to your body tissues during
the Surface Interval Time of a repetitive dive series?
"Reciprocal Course" refers to what?
A buddy team plans a cold and strenuous dive. How would the dive profile
be adjusted for these adverse conditions?

Dive Group?

Your surface air consumption rate allows you to remain underwater for 1 hour.
How long would you be able to stay under at 99' (in minutes)?
Most aquatic animal injuries result from what cause?
Choose the diver's greatest enemy from the following list: Buoyancy, sharks,
Killer Whales, hypothermia, panic, a torn wet suit, a missing dive boat,
their buddy, pollution, thunderstorms, throwing up, boat traffic
A buddy team makes the following dive: 75' for 28 minutes with a surface
interval of 3 hours and 45 minutes. What is their final repetitive group
designation?
What could be considered a very dangerous use for a buoyancy compensating
jacket?
What "air-sharing" technique would be considered to be the safest for the
rescuer?
How does one avoid mask squeeze?
What is the most important skill to acquire as a scuba diver?
Why are weight belts put on a certain way, and what is the standard position
for a weight belt ?
You should know the difference between the following ascents and when (and
if) they would be used: Alternate air source ascent; Buddy-breathing (2 people
sharing 1 regulator) ascent; Emergency swimming ascent at 1' per second while
humming; Blow out all air and race to the surface
Scuba tanks have what information stamped near the top of the tank?
What happens to scuba tank if it is involved in a fire?
Rank the following parts of a scuba course in order of importance: Open Water
Training; The written exam; Classroom Lecture; Pool Training
What should one do to prevent lung over-expansion while scuba diving
What is the main purpose for keeping at least 100 psi of air in a scuba tank?
As one descends, the length of allowable time to avoid decompression sickness
gets moe or less?
A balloon is filled with 1 cubic feet of air and sealed at a depth of 66
feet before being released. What would be its volume in cubic feet at the
surface (sea level)?
At approximately what depth in seawater is 5 Atm. (absolute) of pressure
reached?
What is the maximum safe rate of ascent is (in feet/minute)?
Upon ascent (coming up) and descent what will happen to the air in a BC?
Do divers generally get heavier or lighter as they descend?
You are having trouble equalizing your ears during descent. What should you
do?
Tanks should be visually inspected (VTI) how often under normal conditions?
Nitrogen, and only nitrogen, may cause 2 major underwater problems. What
are they?
Define exactly what the term, "Bottom time" refers to.
What repetitive letter group would you be in after spending 63 minutes at
52'?
If you had a choice, especially if you were diving without a computer, which
would be preferred? The shallower dive first in a repetitive 2-dive sequence;
The deeper dive first in a repetitive 2-dive sequence
To officially have 2 scuba dives, how much time must elapse between them?
What is the first aid for a diver with air embolism or decompression sickness?
The most common form of vertigo is caused by?
What is the no-decompression limit for a dive to 85' for your first dive
of the day (in minutes)?
A diver goes to 20 feet and remains there for 35minutes. He returns to the
surface and puts on another scuba and enters the water immediately. He descends
to 75 feet. His bottom time is 32 minutes. After decompressing the appropriate
length of time, he remains on the surface for 3 hours and 27 minutes. The
next dive is to 112 feet for a bottom time of 13 minutes.
The repetitive group the diver is in after leaving the water from the 75'
dive is?
The repetitive group the diver is in after the surface interval is?

surface?

best course of action is to do what?

the concepts related to the questions above, please refer to the appropriate
